Larian Studios Clarifies Its Use of Machine Learning for Next Project

The developer behind popular RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently teased its next major project, generating a wave of hype within the player base. However, follow-up statements from the company's co-founder have introduced nuance to the conversation, addressing the developer's philosophy toward generative artificial intelligence.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a latest clarification, Larian's director explained that the company is using machine learning for particular supporting purposes. These include enhancing presentation materials, creating initial artistic references, and writing temporary dialogue.

Importantly, Vincke made clear that the end assets in the game will be created solely by human writers. "We are writing every line ourselves," he affirmed.

Our studio is continuously increasing our pool of storytellers and are busily putting together dedicated writer rooms.

As this area is being particularly mentioned — we right now have twenty-three artistic staff and have positions available for further talent.

Each initiative we do is incremental and aimed at having people spend more time on actual creation.

Any machine learning application used well is a boost to a creative team process, not a substitute for their craft.

Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path

The revelation of using AI at first provoked unease among some the fanbase. In response, Vincke issued more clarification on online platforms.

"Our team utilizes machine learning to research ideas, just like we use the internet and physical media," he explained. "In the initial ideation stages we use it as a simple sketch for layout which we then swap out with original illustrations."

He noted, "We've hired creatives for their creative vision, not for their capacity to execute what a algorithm proposes."

Three Pillars of Practical Application

Vincke had earlier outlined the company's practical strategy to machine learning, defining its use into three main functions:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: This includes polishing mocap data, voice editing, and technical processes like retargeting animations.
  • Accelerated Iteration: Using tools to rapidly prototype simple versions of mechanics to test concepts ahead of expensive implementation.
  • Experimental Frontiers: Investigating how AI could in the future create emergent player agency, specifically in managing player-driven narratives in a detailed game universe.

He specifically stated that central narrative disciplines — such as writing — are are in no way departments where the studio is replacing creative involvement. Conversely, Larian is recruiting more in these very positions.

"We are not launching a game with any AI components, and we are certainly not considering trimming down creatives to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
