A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the metropolis of Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country battling entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old entertainer was confronted by three suspects, one of whom shot at him before escaping on foot.

The reason of the attack is unknown and no arrests have taken place, as per the official statement.

Law enforcement said that Stock was attacked as he was leaving a location close to the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the building overseeing the implementation of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by unknown people, according to reports.

"Authorities believe the man was confronted by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," authorities confirmed.

Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a individual with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what appeared to be a guard's attire firing shots on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ tried to run away after he was wounded but succumbed to his injuries a short distance away.

Police added that Stock had an gun that was not fired and no items were stolen during the attack.
