US air traffic controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," the official informed Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to keep doing their duties without pay.

But some have been missing, leading terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays due to climate and additional factors.

Over three thousand American flights were postponed on the weekend, and the secretary said he anticipates the circumstances to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," Duffy said in an discussion on a weekend program, adding that he had met with several controllers to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, can I secure another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports said flights would be delayed due to a shortage of employees - among the peak after the shutdown began.

The US government shutdown reached its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, rendering it the second-longest halt in the past.

He has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would reduce the quantity of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his interview, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to travel by air in the United States, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official stated.

That same day, the former president, who at the period was in his first term as president, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
