Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
