Cameroonian Opposition Leader to Face Court Action Over Electoral Turmoil, Government Announces

Political Demonstration in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon are furious that the president has won an eighth presidential term

The nation's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has announced that political opponent Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over allegations that he provoked "violent electoral rallies".

At least 4 protesters have been lost their lives during clashes between law enforcement and protesters since the electoral process on 12 October, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 securing an eighth consecutive term.

The opposition leader insists that he won the election, a statement rejected by Biya's ruling party, the CPDM.

Violent crackdowns by law enforcement on demonstrators have worried the world leaders, with the UN, AU and EU urging moderation.

Official's Claims

On Tuesday, the interior minister alleged Tchiroma Bakary of planning what he described as "illegal" protests causing the deaths, and also rebuked him for announcing success in the election.

He added that Tchiroma Bakary's "accomplices behind an insurrectionary plan" will also undergo judicial processes.

Election Results

The president, who assumed office in the early 80s and is now the most elderly national leader, won the October 12 election with a majority of the ballots, compared to a significant minority for the challenger, according to the electoral authority.

Opposition Response

Issa Tchiroma is yet to respond to the official announcement to try him, but he had previously declared that he rejected a fraudulent outcome - and that he was not afraid of being detained.

On election result day, he said that gunmen shot on demonstrators assembled near his home in the city of Garoua, fatally wounding at least 2 people.

Investigation Revealed

Recently, the government official announced that an probe would be launched into unrest prior to and following the declaration of the poll figures.

"Throughout the violence, some of the criminals were killed," he stated, without giving a precise figure of protesters who have been lost their lives in the clashes.

Nji noted that multiple members of the police and military also suffered major harm.

Ongoing Circumstances

Even though Nji insisted the situation nationwide was now manageable, demonstrators remain active in some parts of the country, especially in urban centers, where demonstrators mounted obstructions on Tuesday, and burnt tires on the thoroughfares.

Analysts alert that the post-electoral violence could plunge the country into a governmental instability.
