During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit. A Two-Season Greenlight On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters. "My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "Iām incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future." Network Praise In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky style. "All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'" A Comforting Counterpoint Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Thereās something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family go about their simple existence. Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts. āIt feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,ā said Cappa. āThe attitude is that we have to know weāre the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.ā Future Seasons Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan. The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
